⚡ Throttle

The ENGWE LE20 does not include a throttle, so its 750 W rear hub motor only activates when you’re pedaling. Riders won’t be able to twist or push a throttle lever to pull away from a standstill or to boost speed without pedaling effort. Instead, the bike relies entirely on its five levels of pedal-assist, engaging up to its factory-limited top speed of 20 mph in Class 1 mode.

Compared with many mid-drive and hub-drive e-bikes that offer thumb or twist throttles for on-demand power, the LE20’s omission of a throttle keeps the controls simple and the overall system lighter by roughly one to two pounds. It also streamlines maintenance since there’s no extra wiring or mechanical linkage for a throttle mechanism. Riders get an unbroken, bike-like feel through the pedals and can focus on cadence and gear selection.

Choosing a bike without a throttle matters most if you plan to ride in areas that restrict throttle-enabled e-bikes—such as certain multi-use trails—or if you prefer a more exercise-oriented ride. Commuters who frequently stop at traffic lights, or anyone who needs instant, hands-off power (for instance, to climb steep driveways without pedaling) might miss having a throttle. For everyone else, the LE20 delivers legal compliance, simplicity, and a conventional ride experience.
