The ENGWE N1 Air does not include a throttle, which means riders must pedal in order to engage the motor. Unlike many electric bikes that let you twist or press a thumb lever to accelerate from a standstill without any pedaling—often providing up to 20 mph (32 km/h) of pure throttle-powered speed—the N1 Air relies entirely on its pedal‐assist system. As you pedal, one of five assistance levels kicks in, boosting your effort up to its maximum assist speed (typically 25 km/h, or 15.5 mph, in EU‐legal mode), but there is no option to ride hands-free on power alone.

In practical terms, the absence of a throttle shapes both the user experience and legal classification. The N1 Air falls squarely into “class 1” territory (pedal‐assist only, no throttle) in regions like North America, and meets EU regulations for pedelecs. By contrast, many commuter and cargo e-bikes with throttles provide instant torque without pedaling, making them popular among users with limited joint mobility or those who want a stronger “push” off the line.

Who should care about this? Fitness‐minded cyclists and those comfortable with steady pedaling won’t miss the throttle, since the N1 Air’s motor delivers consistent support as you ride. However, commuters who face frequent stop‐and‐go traffic, or riders recovering from injuries, may prefer models with a throttle to reduce strain on knees or to get started on steep grades.
