Mechanical disc brakes on the PURE UNICORN U2 use a cable-and-pad system to clamp directly onto a rotor attached to the wheel hub. In practice this means you get the strong, all-weather stopping power of a disc brake without the need for hydraulic lines or fluid. When you pull the lever, a steel cable tightens the pads against the rotor, delivering dependable braking performance through rain, mud, and snow.

Because they operate much like a traditional V-brake—only at the wheel hub—mechanical discs are straightforward to service. You won’t need special fluids or bleeding kits; most adjustments involve simple cable tension tweaks and occasional pad replacement. While they demand a bit more lever force and offer slightly less modulation than hydraulic disc systems, their simplicity makes them easy to fix on the trail or in a home workshop using basic tools.
