The ENGWE M1 is equipped with a speed sensor on its rear wheel that measures how fast the bike is moving and triggers pedal assistance accordingly. As soon as the wheel crosses roughly 1 km/h, the motor steps in to deliver up to the legal maximum of 25 km/h in most regions. Riders will notice that power delivery is consistent once rolling—there’s minimal fluctuation in assist level during a steady ride. The trade-off is a slight delay of around 200–300 milliseconds before the motor kicks in from a standstill, so hill starts or quick take-offs can feel a bit less immediate compared to other sensor setups.

Compared with cadence sensors, which respond directly to pedal revolutions, the ENGWE M1’s speed sensor is simpler and often more reliable under varied conditions. Unlike torque sensors that gauge how much force you apply and offer finely tuned, proportional power, a speed sensor simply looks at wheel rotation. This makes the M1’s system easier to maintain and typically more affordable, though it won’t deliver the same “natural” feel you’d find on higher-end e-bikes with torque feedback. For day-to-day use—commuting, errands or leisure rides—the straightforward response of a speed-based assist can be perfectly adequate.

This sensor choice matters most for riders focused on durability and cost-effectiveness rather than racing or high-performance sport. Commuters who travel 10 to 30 km each day will appreciate the low maintenance of a speed sensor, and casual cyclists will benefit from consistent assist levels up to 25 km/h without worrying about calibration. Sport-oriented cyclists or those seeking a very responsive assist right from the first millimeter of pedal stroke may notice the M1’s slight start-up lag, but for most urban and recreational riders, the speed sensor delivers reliable, predictable support on every ride.
