The Engwe ENGWE P20 uses a rear hub-drive motor, which means the electric motor is integrated directly into the wheel hub at the back of the bike. Riders feel immediate, wheel-level assistance without power being routed through the chain or derailleurs. Hub-drive systems typically deliver between 250 and 500 watts of continuous power and generate roughly 40–60 Nm of torque, pushing the bike up to the common legal limit of 25 km/h (15.5 mph) under pedal assist. Because the motor operates independently of the gearing, shifts remain smooth and maintenance is generally lower than with more complex drivetrains.

Compared with mid-drive systems, which sit at the crank and leverage the bike’s gears, a rear hub drive like the P20’s offers a simpler build and quieter ride. The weight sits behind the rider, which can make handling feel a bit more planted on straightaways but slightly less nimble when navigating tight turns or steep inclines. On flats and gentle hills, the hub motor’s direct-drive character efficiently maintains speed without overloading the chain or cassette, though it won’t match the climbing torque of a mid-drive unit geared down through multiple cogs.

For commuters and casual riders who value affordability, ease of upkeep, and smooth, consistent assist up to the 25 km/h limit, a hub‐drive rear motor is a solid choice. It’s particularly well suited to city streets, bike paths and light gravel, where stop-and-go traffic or moderate grades predominate. Riders planning heavy touring, frequent steep climbs or very technical off-road trails may prefer the extra low-speed torque and balanced weight distribution of a mid-drive design—but for everyday use, the ENGWE P20’s rear hub drive delivers reliable boost with minimal fuss.
